omg i feel really really accomplished!! i'm done with all the compulsory issues and ideas AQs, left with the book review now! i wonder how i found the motivation to churn out 7 exercises in 2 days o.o maybe it's desperation?

丽江was brilliant! the photos are in my dada's comp so i can't post them yet, but here's some of the highlights:

the funny
1. failed translations!! "此处禁止逗留拍照，请您快速通过" = "here no loitering photograph asks you to pass fast!" of course the most epic of all are the statements on the back of the arrival card, which in an extremely friendly manner addresses all foreigners as "aliens".

2. the jay chou 优乐美奶茶 ad!! super corny and hilarious, qxjj ss and i tumbled around in unrestrained laughter complete with convulsions! we still found it funny after my attempt to re-enact jay chou's deadpan delivery of the punchline.

the cute
1. THE DOGS :D :D :D in all shapes and sizes, from random dogs on the streets to the tiny puppy being held like a baby by a pretty girl in the shop to 大宝 the inn dog, they're all so adorable!! i couldn't stop squealing!

2. the babies and kids!! the locals carry their kids around on their backs, they have large inquisitive eyes and chubby rosy cheeks aww :D

3. the cloth frog! which i fell in love with at first sight but found that i had no use for it, therefore didn't buy it :( which i really regret because i miss it a lot. 四婶 suggested bringing it home and waiting for it to turn into a prince i can marry! hahaha so cute ^^

4. everyone showing concern for poor humphrey after he was brutally squashed back into my bag by the heartless officials working at the 丽江 airport. they were searching my bag because my mp3 player set off the alarm, and after i took it out for them they crushed humphrey back into my bag for another round of scanning before i could do so myself. i actually cried :( the reaction of my family after i tearfully joined them:
mama: "humphrey 你没事吧? 被吓到啦"
dada: "aiyoooo, humphrey 真可怜! sayang sayang! -kisses humphrey on the head"
四婶: "你的humphrey要不要吃惊风散? 他一定被吓到!" (hahaha she was really so serious about it! so cute)
qxjj: "is your humphrey okay? i remember that time my yellow dog got squashed by the airport people too -reenacts scene-"

1. all the scenery! the photos will speak haha.
2. 印象丽江! it was breathtaking, i can finally understand why some people can fly all the way across the globe just to watch it. i was so touched i cried several times :O

i think there's something wrong with my back!! i've only been in front of the comp for 2 hours (plus i walk around in between) and my shoulders/ somewhere on my back/ my neck is aching :( :( and it's really uncomfortable, stretching doesn't help! so annoying .___.

on another note, i completed the emily dickinson essay! i can't believe i only managed to like 1 out of the 39 poems, the rest are really so confusing and contain too many dashes :S still have the carol ann duffy one, plus approximately 37 other pieces of homework -_______- i wanted to do as many as i could today but i only managed one! i think i may have to bring some overseas with me D:

shall start watching you're beautiful after i'm done with the don't don dvd! i saw the pig-chasing scene and it was RETARDED TTM i like! :D

oh one more thing!
thank you everyone who wished me good luck for my kaoji!! whether it's through sms, msn/ my lj or verbally complete with a hug, it gave me strength and was really heartwarming ♥ (:

KAOJI IS OVER OVER OVER!!!! met jeremy yiqing and ziwei :D it went quite well except the qiuyun kuaiban could've been better and i wish i could play louder, the dance studio was HUGE O.O and the popping door scared me! the examiners were old and cute, i think they were quite pleased with my playing (they were conversing quite loudly during my qiuyun/ xianjuyin) so it's a good sign :D

come to think of it, it's the very last kaoji i'll ever be taking :( after 9 years... as a tribute, here's a recount of all the kaojis i ever took!

四级 -2001
it was at the super old, rundown nafa building, the waiting room had blueish-grey carpet and a bunch of older guys/ girls. they seemed quite daunted at the sight of my bro and i. we were really tiny! (cos we were 9 years old at the time! i weighed 21 kg)

and so my bro went first, when he came out he said the examiners (one of whom is our favourite balding 田爷爷) jumped a little and said, "哎哟，这么来了个那么小的。“ i vaguely recall the examiners looking at the big white dots on my xian and asking if the little dude before me was my bro. i think i even brought in my bro's erhu as a spare!

also, i wasn't nervous at all! it went pretty well, managed a merit :D

七级 -2003
still at the rundown nafa building! seeing as i had about 15 minutes to go, i went to the toilet. when i emerged, my mum was like "it's your turn!!" because the candidate before me decided to give the kaoji a miss .___. so i fetched my erhu in a flurry and had to climb a flight of stairs to reach this little corridor. my heart was hammering when i sat down, but as i listened to zhenwei who had quite terrible yinzhun i relaxed (oops).

i remember sitting on a piano chair! halfway during D 大调 the examiner stood up and i was like "eek! could he possibly have seen my dark blue dots? they're supposed to almost blend into my xian, the colour was specially selected for its camouflaging qualities!" luckily i didn't get distracted enough to 断 ^^"

and i did better than expected! earned my first distinction :D

九级 -2005
(NAFA)
this time they upgraded to the new building! i met ziwei and sheila in the waiting room. ziwei was totally freaking out and i became really nervous too D: and alas! the examiner was none other than 田爷爷 again. apparently he had caught a cold, he switched off the air-conditioning and opened some windows. i was quite jittery and somehow managed to 断 in the middle of 增二度 which is not very 断able o.o

and so, it didn't go very smoothly! could've scored better, but merit is not that bad haha.

(NUS)
nus was better! i think i got the nice 11plus timing, the waiting hall was quite empty. aural was terrible because i didn't know the notes were going to be played together! then i started 无穷动 a bit too fast and requested to start again, the cute grandpa examining was very nice, he told me not to worry and to go ahead. after everything he exclaimed,"你那兰花花, 拉得真美!“ -starts playing imaginery erhu and singing along-"真美!" -and at this point he paused, recounting my playing. after a while he flipped through my score sheets and said "不过你这个听音和试谱，不行啊！真是遗憾，遗憾!" and i think i must've looked like i was about to cry, because he added, “你今年几岁啊?“ and i told him thirteen, "啊那不用担心! 路还长呢... 拉得真美!"

and after i left the room, i realised that my results wouldn't matter to me because the grandpa was so touched by my playing. at that point of time i don't think my playing had ever moved someone so much and i was overwhelmed by that magical feeling.

this was also the year i started to realised what i'd been unable to see all the years i had been learning erhu- that music isn't just many notes put together together; it is alive, dynamic, telling a story of its own. it's a connection, a feeling, a scene, a smell in the form of a sound.

so the nus kaoji is one of my most memorable ones to date! and my playing must have really moved the grandpa because he gave me a distinction by upping the marks for my pieces to make up for the loss of marks in the side-reading and aural.

(NAFA -2007)
i remember thinking i'll never ever ever pass this, it's diploma and it's really hard! but i was quite sure of the image/ feeling portrayed in each part of the piece. this was a repeat of my grade 7 exam, i went to the toilet thinking i still had 2 people before me but when i emerged from the toilet i discovered the person before me didn't appear, so tada! it's my turn -.-

the room had a gloomy grey carpet and was windowless. in my hurry i didn't manage to put 松香 so i asked the examiners if i could do so, and one quipped,"终于来了个比较有自信的!" lol. to my relief my playing was quite focused!

after i finished playing one examiner passed me a small scrap of paper and told me to give it to the receptionist. i glanced down and it said "推荐参与高分音乐会" and i double took in shock because i really thought i barely passed!

(NUS -2009)
i almost walked into the exam room because i thought it was the waiting room, it said "erhu" :3 chatted with ziwei and yiqing! ziwei has some epic confusion over everyone's ages hahaha. yiqing was really happy she was like "omg i love 天山!! this part this part! oh i like this part too!" super cute hahaha :D

gor's turn was quite fast! the door popped open and i went in. maybe i should've spoken a bit louder haha when i said good afternoon the examiners didn't seem to hear :3 played the whole of 天山, xulaoshi smiled at me after i finished playing. the examiners started conversing rather loudly in the middle of my 秋韵 o.o and xulaoshi stopped me halfway through the kuaiban, she said "不错的!" and told me to play the next piece. they were chatting away during my 闲居吟 and xulaoshi actually sang along LOL i was really amused. caught bits of their conversation cos 闲居吟 has a lot of long notes!

so yup! that marks the end of my kaoji life. i'll miss it actually! :( but at least now i can learn other pieces! off to watch the suju dvd from don't don repackaged so that i can return it to allyssa!

i wasn't really a fan of the wondergirls, but i really really respect yeeun now!! check out how she stood up for her fans, she responded very maturely and intelligently (((: go yenny you're awesome!

the anti was really dumb she doesn't even know which countries fall into the third world category -_____- in fact the terms first world, second world and third world hardly apply in modern context anymore. and her english was filled with mistakes too, "i'm too proud of a person to make myself look stupid" just made me laugh because well, it did make her look stupid! such irony!

on the same note, i don't really understand why some people like to criticise others relentlessly. i feel that you should only criticise when you have something constructive to say; otherwise, it doesn't serve any purpose at all, except to make you look like you have nothing better to do. it's even stranger to criticise people you know nothing about, because you have no idea what it's like to be them and face the same situations. so it's not fair to impose your own judgements and views on others without first knowing the circumstances that resulted in certain actions, decisions or words spoken.
